Cheesy Balsamic Onion Garlic Bread

Tasty and perfect for sharing.


  • 2 Large Red Onions
  • 200 ml Balsamic Vinegar
  • 1/2 Jar red pesto
  • 250g Grated Cheddar Cheese
  • Olive Oil
  • 5 garlic cloves – peeled and finely chopped
  • Coarse rock or sea salt
  • For the Dough
    • 360 ml warm water
    • 1.5 tsp salt
    • 545g white bread flour
    • 0.5 tsp sugar
    • 1 tsp dried yeast


  1. Mix together the ingredients for the dough ensuring that the salt and yeast are not added together.
  2. Kneed the dough until it is soft and stretchy and leave to prove in an oiled and covered bowl for 30 minutes
  3. Roughly chop the onions and fry in a little olive oil until soft. Add the balsamic vinegar and fry gently until the vinegar has mostly reduced
  4. Work the dough into a baking tray or pizza tin and drizzle with a little olive oil before smoothing the pesto over leaving the edges clean
  5. Scatter on the chopped garlic and spread the onions evenly over the pizza bread
  6. Add a little coarse salt to the edges and top the bread with cheese
  7. Leave to prove for another half hour and then bake on a medium heat for 20-30 minutes until the top is golden and the bread has cooked through
